Fryeella gardneri (Setch.) Kyl.
Fauchea gardneri Setche1l 1901: 125. Fryeella gardneri (Setch.) Kylin 1931: 16; Hollenberg & Abbott 1966: 96. Rhodymenia gardneri (Setch.) Kyl. 1925: 41. Fryeella gardneri var. prostrata Dawson & Neushul 1966: 178.
Thalli to 16 cm tall, repent and in thick clusters, or erect and isolated, deep rose red to orange-red, with strong bluish cast to lower surface when fresh; branching 3 or 4 times, the second and third dichotomies to 4 cm wide; ultimate divisions to 1 cm wide, with blunt apices; tetrasporangia in irregular, grapheiform sori, scattered over all except basal 1-2 cm of blade, produced on 1 side only (lower surface if repent); cystocarps usually 1+ mm diam.
Frequent, subtidal (7-50 m), S. Br. Columbia to Bahia Papalote, Baja Calif.; in Calif., Humboldt Bay, Monterey Peninsula (common in Carmel Submarine Canyon), Morro Bay, and Anacapa I. Type locality: Whidbey I., Wash.
Since prostrate forms are commonly found in company with more erect specimens, we do not regard var. prostrata Dawson & Neushul (1966: 178) as worthy of recognition.
