Cryptantha rostellata (Greene) Greene
Habit: Annual 5--20+ cm, +- stout, stiff. Stem: branches few, above to occasionally throughout; +- red, strigose and canescent. Leaf: generally several opposite pairs below inflorescence; ascending, 1--1.5 cm, +- oblanceolate,+- thick, persistent, hairs ascending to spreading. Inflorescence: in 1s or 2s, +- stiff; bracts 0; pedicel < 0.5 mm, spreading to ascending. Flower: calyx 2--3 mm, 3--3.5(4) mm in fruit, +- persistent, lobes lanceolate, margins sparse-ciliate, midvein with many stout, hooked or curved bristles occasionally basally encrusted with exudate; corolla limb 1--2 mm diam, appendages minute, pale yellow. Fruit: nutlet 1, 2.3--2.8 mm, lance-ovate to lanceolate, shiny, margin rounded to sharp-angled, base wide-truncate, tip +- beaked; abaxially rounded, ridge 0; adaxially flat, attachment scar edges abutted near tip, +- gapped lower 1/3, wide-forked at base; axis not to nutlet tip.
Ecology: Open, rocky, dry sites, sparse grassland, chaparral, foothill woodland; Elevation: 40--800 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCoRI, n SNF, ScV, nw MP; Distribution Outside California: eastern Washington, eastern Oregon. Flowering Time: Apr--Jun
