Habit: Annual 5--30 cm, +- gray; central axis +- poorly defined. Stem: slender, stiff, branches throughout; dense-strigose, occasionally spreading-rough-hairy. Leaf: 1--4(5) cm, linear to lance-linear, strigose, occasionally spreading-rough-hairy, hairs minute-bulbous-based. Inflorescence: in 1s or 2s, occasionally crowded; bracts 0; pedicel +- 0. Flower: calyx 1.5--2.5 mm, 4--6 mm in fruit, not constricted above, lobes +- erect, generally persistent, lance-linear, 1 generally longer, margin with ascending, short rough hairs, midveins thickened, generally coarse spreading-bristly, hairs occasionally bulbous-based; corolla late-deciduous, limb 1--1.5 mm diam, appendages 0. Fruit: nutlets generally 4, 1.6--2.1 mm, lanceolate, fine-sharp-papillate, mottled gray-brown, dull, margin +- sharp-angled, base truncate, tip tapered to +- beaked; abaxially low-rounded to +- flat, ridge 0; adaxially flat, attachment scar edges not raised, abutted entire length or narrow-gapped below middle, gradually forked, flare-gapped at base; axis generally to nutlet tips.
Ecology: Sandy, gravelly soils, open slopes, flats, generally sagebrush scrub, pinyon-pine woodland, occasionally Joshua-tree woodland; Elevation: 1480--2740 m. Bioregional Distribution: ne SNE, W&I, ne DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to Washington, Idaho, Utah. Flowering Time: Apr--Jul
