Cryptantha recurvata Coville
Habit: Annual 5--40 cm, slender. Stem: branches 0, from base, or throughout, coarse-strigose. Leaf: 1--3 cm, linear to narrow-oblanceolate, strigose with many appressed to spreading bulbous-based bristles. Inflorescence: in 2s or generally 1s; bracts 0; pedicel generally 0. Flower: calyx 1.5--2 mm, 2--3.5 mm in fruit, recurved in fruit, late-deciduous, +- constricted above, lobes narrow-linear, dense-ascending- to -spreading-tan-hairy, midvein thickened, spreading-bristly; corolla limb 0.5--1(1.5) mm diam, appendages 0. Fruit: nutlet 1(2, then 1 > other), 1.6--2 mm, lanceolate, incurved, brown, grainy-papillate, dull, margin rounded, base rounded, tip +- beaked; abaxially +- biconvex, ridge low; adaxially +- flat, incurved at tip, attachment scar edges, generally +- abutted near tip, flare-gapped at base; axis not to nutlet tip(s).
Ecology: Sandy to rocky soils, creosote-bush scrub, Joshua-tree woodland; Elevation: 650--1700(1830) m. Bioregional Distribution: SNE, DMoj; Distribution Outside California: to Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona. Flowering Time: Mar--Jun
