Jania Lamouroux 1812
Thalli with crustose or rhizomatous bases and articulated fronds. Fronds dichotomously branched throughout, or occasionally bearing short pinnae or secondarily produced laterals. Intergenicula terete or subterete. Intergenicular medulla with arching tiers of straight cells of same length. Genicula with a single tier of thick-walled cells. Conceptacles axial in origin, 1 in each fertile intergeniculum. Spermatangial conceptacles narrow, elongate, unbeaked; conceptacular canal less than 100 µm long. Fusion cell thick, biconvex, with carposporangial filaments arising strictly from margin. Those intergenicula bearing tetrasporangial or carposporangial conceptacles producing 2+ surmounting branches.
Haliptylon gracile (Lamour.) Johans.
Corallina gracilis Lamouroux 1816: 288; Dawson 1953a: 129; Ganesan 1968a: 71. Haliptylon gracile (Lamour.) Johansen 1971a: 243.
Fronds to 10 cm tall, usually saxicolous, multipinnate; axial intergenicula 500-800 µm long, to 500 µm broad; intergenicula in branches smaller, as little as 100 µm diam. or less; tetrasporangial conceptacles to 400 µm diam.; sexual plants not known.
