Thalli 4-5(8) cm tall, bluish-red, with inconspicuous stipes, mostly broadly ovate, rarely lobed, the margins entire or crisped; blade 60-120 µm thick, with few periclinal medullary filaments; refractive cells common; cortex of 2 or 3 cell layers; tetrasporangia and gonimoblasts as in other species.

Abundant where found, in dense, overlapping clusters in shaded overhangs along channels, Cape Arago, Ore., and Farallon Is. and Monterey Peninsula to Little Sur River (Monterey Co.), Calif. Type locality: Pt. Pinos (Pacific Grove), Calif.
