Genista monosperma (L.) Lam.
Habit: Shrub to 4 m. Stem: branches pendent, silky-hairy in youth, branches pendent. Leaf: simple, linear to lanceolate, ephemeral. Inflorescence: loose racemes, axillary. Flower: calyx 3--5 mm, 2-lipped, upper lip 2-lobed, toothed, glabrous, splitting around circumference, falling after flower; corolla 10--12 mm, white, banner ovate, hairy only on midrib, wings oblong, obtuse, generally < keel. Fruit: indehiscent, 14--18 mm, obovate with short beak, generally inflated. Seed: 1--2, black.
Ecology: Uncommon. Disturbed areas, alluvial fans; Elevation: < 200 m. Bioregional Distribution: SnGb, PR (San Diego Co.); Distribution Outside California: Iberian Peninsula, Canary Islands, northern Africa. Flowering Time: Feb--Jun Note: Possibly only a waif in California; flowers more fragrant than other species.
Synonyms: Retama monosperma (L.) Boiss.
