Habit: Annual. Stem: decumbent to erect. Leaf: cauline; stipules ovate-acuminate or bristle-tipped; leaflets 1--2 cm, narrowly elliptic to ovate. Inflorescence: heads generally paired, +- sessile or occasionally 1 short-peduncled above (1)2 leaves, 5--15 mm wide, few--many-flowered, ovate or spheric; peduncle 0 or 1; pedicels 0. Flower: calyx 4--7 mm, hairy, lobes >> tube, tapered or bristle-like, plumose; corolla 5--9 mm, purple or 2-colored. Seed: 1. Chromosomes: 2n=16.
Ecology: Disturbed areas, dunes; Elevation: < 600 m. Bioregional Distribution: NCo, NCoRO, CCo, SnFrB, ChI; Distribution Outside California: South America. Flowering Time: Mar--May
