Poterium Sanguisorba, Asperula cynan-
chica, Phyteuma orbiculare, Thesium
linophyllum, and Juniperus communis
in abundance. Gentiana Amarella equally
so upon the level surface, as is the case
with Carduus acaulis and Carlina vulgaris;
in the same situation Chlora perfoliata is
occasionally met with. On the ridge, Taxus
baccata is abundant, many of the trees de-
noting a good age. Cineraria campestris
with some seasons abundant on a down
towards the New Inn. Lathraea squamaria,
in wood copse, on the north side of the Hog’s
Back. Monotropa Hypopitys in some sea-
sons is plentiful under the beech trees in
a plantation overhanging the Compton Quarry;
in other seasons scarcely a plant is to be seen.
Upon the lands forming the sloping por-
tions of the Hog’s Back, the following plants
are generally distributed; Pastinaca sativa,
Torilis nodosa, Tragopogon pratensis, Picris
hieracioides, Specularia hybrida, Linaria
spuria, L. Elatine and L. minor, Calamintha
Acinos, Galeopsis Ladanum, and Euphorbia
exigua. Pyrus Aria cannot fail to attract
attention by the snow-white under surface
of the leaves, which are rendered very con-
spicuous by the slightest breeze of the wind.
Clematis Vitalba trails over all the fences
in which also Viburnum Lantana and
Ligustrum Vulgare form a prominent
feature upon diverse portions of the chalk
