Helv. 1: 130. 1811) is both an illegitimate and superfluous name for what is correctly called Aira pulchella Willd. (Enum. Pl. 101. 1809), according to European grass taxonomists; that Aira elegans Vill. (Nomencl. Bot. 1: 44. 1840) is a later homonym of Aira elegans Willd. ex Gaudin (illegitimate, see ICBN 53.1 N.1); that Aira elegans Willd. ex Kunth (Enum. Pl. 1: 44. 1833) is based on the same type as Aira elegans Willd. ex Gaudin, and is also a later homonym of Aira elegans Willd. ex Gaudin (illegitimate, see ICBN 53.1 N.1); and that Aira elegantissima Schur (Verh. Mitth. Siebenburg. Verein Naturwiss. Hermannsadt 4: 85. 1853) and description clearly applied to plants introduced into North America, but the earlier name Aira pulchella Willd. should now be applied (although no one has yet carefully determined if our plants match the description of Aira pulchella Willd.). Rouy, which does not occur in North America, and that Dieter Wilken (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author for Aira), in a 4 Sep 2003 e-mail to Greenhouse, accepted Soreng's treatment. [According to Soreng, as accepted by Wilken, Aira pulchella Willd. is a synonym of Molineriella laevis (Brot.) Rouy, which does not occur in North America.] | |||||
