Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 28 Aug 2003 e-mail from Dieter Wilken see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Aira elegans Willd. ex Gaudin (Agrost. Helv. 1: 130. 1811) is both an illegitimate and superfluous name for what is correctly called Aira pulchella Willd. (Enum. Pl. 101. 1809), according to European grass taxonomists; that Aira elegans Vill. (Nomencl. Bot. 1: 44. 1840) is a later homonym of Aira elegans Willd. ex Gaudin (illegitimate, see ICBN 53.1 N.1); that Aira elegans Willd. ex Kunth (Enum. Pl. 1: 44. 1833) is based on the same type as Aira elegans Willd. ex Gaudin, and is also a later homonym of Aira elegans Willd. ex Gaudin (illegitimate, see ICBN 53.1 N.1); and that Aira elegantissima Schur (Verh. Mitth. Siebenburg. Verein Naturwiss. Hermannsadt 4: 85. 1853) and description clearly applied to plants introduced into North America, but the earlier name Aira pulchella Willd. should now be applied (although no one has yet carefully determined if our plants match the description of Aira pulchella Willd.). [Aira pulchella Willd. is to be applied to plants treated as Aira elegantissima Schur in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]]
Correspondence 2 7 Oct 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that Robert Soreng (Chief Editor and Aira treatment author of the Catalogue of New World Grasses, http://mobot.mobot.org/W3T/Search/nwgc.html), in a 3 Sep 2003 e-mail, explained that Aira pulchella (and A. elegans) is a synonym of Molineriella laevis (Brot.) Rouy, which does not occur in North America, and that Dieter Wilken (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author for Aira), in a 4 Sep 2003 e-mail to Greenhouse, accepted Soreng's treatment. [According to Soreng, as accepted by Wilken, Aira pulchella Willd. is a synonym of Molineriella laevis (Brot.) Rouy, which does not occur in North America.]
Correspondence 3 Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates, in a note under Aira elegans Willd. ex Roem. & Schult. [note author citation change, made in treatment without explanation; see end of entry], that the plants treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] as Aira elegans Willd. ex Roem. & Schult. have also been treated as Aira elegantissima Schur (listed as a synonym in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), as well as Aira caryophyllea L. var. capillaris Bluff, Nees, & Schauer and Aira pulchella Willd. [which for some reason were not listed as syns]. [Although the latter two names are not listed as synonyms in the treatment for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2], they must be regarded as such, for the same reason that Aira elegantissima Schur is.]
