Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 19 Mar 2012 e-mail from Richard Moe see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that isotypes in JEPS [e.g., JEPS16259, JEPS69102] and UC [e.g., UC574949] of Gilia sherman-hoytiae T. T. Craig have been annotated as Gilia pluriflora A. Heller and Eriastrum pluriflorum (A. Heller) H. Mason [the latter an accepted name in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]], and that the epithet should be spelled "sherman-hoytiae", not "sherman-hoytae". [According to ICBN, Rec. 60C.1.b., the correct termination for a substantive epithet honoring a female whose name ends in a consonant (except -er) is -iae. That the epithet honors a woman is suggested by the (incorrect) spelling "sherman-hoytae", as well as the fact, according to Moe (pers. comm., 20 Mar 2012) that the species was named in honor of a "Mrs. Sherman Hoyt". Therefore, spelling of epithet corrected to Gilia sherman-hoytiae T. T. Craig, from Gilia sherman-hoytae T. T. Craig previously in this Index, 20 Mar 2012. Also, Gilia sherman-hoytiae T. T. Craig is treated as Eriastrum pluriflorum (A. Heller) H. Mason subsp. sherman-hoytiae (T. T. Craig) H. Mason in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2].]
