Notes on Authorship of Name | = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California
a | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
b | Preston e-mail of 5 Jul 2000, "S[cirpus] heterochaetus A. Chase = Schoenoplectus heterochaetus (A. Chase) Soják; Smith, S. G., and G. Yatskievych. 1996. Notes on the genus Scirpus sensu lato in Missouri. Rhodora 98:168-179"
Initial Editorial Comments | reportedly treated in Flora North America as Schoenoplectus heterochaetus by Galen Smith, one of three The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] contributors of Scirpus
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 23 Sep 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that in the entry in this Index for Scirpus heterochaetus, the author citation A. Chase, for Agnes Chase as indicated in Rhodora 6(64): 70-71, pl. 53, f. d. 1904, is not in Authors of Plant Names [nor was it in the Draft Index, even though the citation in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] is A. Chase], and that in TROPICOS, Flora North America, and International Plant Names Index the author citation is given as Chase, for Mary Agnes Chase [also in Authors of Plant Names]. [In the absence of evidence to the contrary, it is here assumed that Agnes Chase and Mary Agnes Chase refer to the same person, so that the author citation corrected to Scirpus heterochaetus Chase, from Scirpus heterochaetus A. Chase previously in this Index, 23 Sep 2004.]
Correspondence 2 | 29 Jan 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that Scirpus heterochaetus, basionym of Schoenoplectus heterochaetus, was published by Agnes Chase in Rhodora 6:70--71 (1904), and that the Harvard University Index of Botanists lists Mary Agnes Chase (Chase in Authors of Plant Names) as a variant name for Agnes Chase. [Therefore, author citation correct as indicated in this Index, 7 Feb 2007.]
Correspondence 3 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by S. Galen Smith see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Scirpus heterochaetus Chase is to be treated as a synonym of Schoenoplectus heterochaetus (Chase) Soják.
