ASTERACEAE
·

Information from the Index of California Plant Names (ICPN)
Initial Editorial Analysis 31 Jan 2008
Notes on Authorship of Name both = Authors of Plant Names
Source of Report for California Munz, P.A. in collaboration with D. D. Keck. 1968, as cited in Kartesz & Meacham
Initial Editorial Comments despite Kartesz & Meacham citation, evidently in no way mentioned in Munz; Gnaphalium peregrinum Fernald listed in Kartesz & Meacham, Nesom (Phytologia 68:193. 1990) as synonym of Gamochaeta pensylvanica and treated as synonym of Gnaphalium purpureum in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1].
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 13 Jul 2004 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates that Guy Nesom, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Author of Gamochaeta and Gnaphalium, treats Gamochaeta pensylvanica (Willd.) Cabrera as a species separate from Gamochaeta purpurea, but does not include California in its geographic range.
Correspondence 2 28 Jan 2008 e-mail from David J. Keil see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 2 indicates that, according to David J. Keil (Family Editor for Asteraceae), the status of Gamochaeta pensylvanica needs to be changed to naturalized: Gamochaeta pensylvanica (Jepson Flora Project-8) is represented in OBI by the following wildlands collections: San Luis Obispo Co: S edge of Nipomo Mesa, 1.8 mi. E of Division St. on Riverside Rd., sandy slope and outwash from Mesa, slopes dominated by coastal scrub, uncommon, 15 April 1998, David Keil 26740; Santa Barbara Co.: Vandenberg Air Force Base, N Base, sandy hills NE of Pine Canyon Gate, area bordered to N by Hwy 1 (Lompoc-Casmalia Rd.) and on both sides of Santa Lucia Canyon Rd., area burned over in autumn 1997, mosaic chaparral, coastal scrub and coastal live oak woodland with wetland areas along Santa Lucia Canyon and Lower Lake Canyon, uncommon, stems many from base, 8 May 1998, David Keil 27139.
