Initial Editorial Analysis 11 Dec 2007
Source of Report for California | The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1]
Initial Editorial Comments | author citation uncertain, (L.) L'Hér. ex Aiton in Kartesz & Meacham
Editorial Recommendation | author citation to be checked [resolved]
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 31 Jul 2007 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates: that Pelargonium grossularioides, Pelargonium inquinans, Pelargonium peltatum, Pelargonium vitifolium, and Pelargonium zonale all were published in vol. 2 of William Aiton, Hortus Kewensis (1789) on pages 42, 414, 427, 425, and 424 respectively; that this work is unavailable at UCB, but has been considered in a paper on typification of the genus Pelargonium in Taxon 30:307 (1981) by J.J.A. van der Walt & P.J. Vorster (The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] author), who conclude that L'Héritier's (at the time) unpublished manuscript of Compendium Generalogium "was made available by L'Héritier to Aiton for the purpose of the Hort. Kew., rather than that the information was taken over by Aiton [evidently, without giving credit for the information to L'Héritier], so that the new names or combinations should be ascribed to L'Héritier alone."; and that, therefore, the correct citations are Pelargonium grossularioides (L.) L'Hér., Pelargonium inquinans (L.) L'Hér., Pelargonium peltatum (L.) L'Hér., Pelargonium vitifolium (L.) L'Hér., and Pelargonium zonale (L.) L'Hér., as given for all in this Index. [Therefore, author citation correct as indicated in this Index, 16 Aug 2007.]
Correspondence 2 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by Piet Vorster see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Pelargonium peltatum (L.) L'Hér. is to be treated as a waif, in part because of an apparent lack of evidence that the plants are naturalized in CA.
Editorial Summary and Current Status
Editorial Summary | rejection, evidently not naturalized in CA, a waif
Current Status | JFP-3, accepted name for taxon occurring in CA only as a waif and/or garden escape, not naturalized
