Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | 20 May 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that Verne Grant and Tom Wendt have proposed to reject the name Gilia grinnellii in favor of Gilia cana (Taxon 52:145--146.2003), explaining that when Brand published Gilia grinnellii (Pflanzenr. IV. 250. Heft 27: 101. 1907), he cited three syntypes, the first of which was destroyed and the other two of which belong to Gilia cana, and that since Gilia grinnellii must be lectotypified by one of the remaining syntypes, it then would become synonymous with Gilia cana, over which it would have priority since it was published six weeks earlier than that name, according to Grant and Wendt. [Combinations for none of the four named subspp. of Gilia cana recognized in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] is listed in International Plant Names Index, so if Gila grinnellii is not rejected, evidently four new combinations would have to be made.]
Correspondence 2 | 8 Mar 2006 e-mail from Leigh Johnson, in response to e-mail query of 2 Mar 2006 from Rosatti see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 cites Brummitt, R. K. 2005. Report of the Committee for Spermatophyta: 56. Taxon 54: 527-536, wherein (1576) includes a recommendation to accept the rejection of Gilia grinnellii [in favor of Gilia cana]. [On 8 Mar 2006, it is unknown to the Editor of this Index whether or not a vote on this proposal was taken at the XVII International Botanical Congress 2005 in Vienna.]
Correspondence 3 | 1 Feb 2008 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 | Correspondence 3 indicates that Gilia grinnellii Brand is listed as a rejected name in ICBN 2006 (App. 4.:474), reflecting approval by the International Botanical Congress 2005 in Vienna and establishing Gilia cana (M. E. Jones) A. Heller the accepted name for the taxon.
