Welcome to the Charterhouse School Herbarium
Algae

This small but historically significant herbarium of plants, algae and fungi dating back to the late eighteenth century is mostly from the British Isles and is maintained separately within the University Herbarium (UC), University of California, Berkeley. There are also limited collections from the continent, North America, South Africa, and Middle East in addition to the Canary Islands, Hawaii, Madeira and Saint Helena. A collection of cultivated specimens represents early introductions into the United Kingdom and specimens are from some of the leading nurserymen, botanists and private estates of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Despite the physical location away from Charterhouse School, this site is dedicated to digital access to this unique and exciting collection which aims to push the boundaries of 'virtual collections' and promote greater understanding of the flora of the British Isles and beyond. Our goal is to employ modern collections preservation, conservation, documentation and bioinformatics techniques to maintain the original integrity and context of these collections and associated data in order to promote and complement collaborative initiatives. Learn more about this collection by following the links on the left hand menu or contact The Keeper with comments, suggestions or advice.
