v. hexandra likes shade - and takes deep shade too. it's a slow grower at first and it needs lots of organic matter in the soil and thrives w/ occasional water. i mulch it regularly w/ pine-needle compost (i use leaf litter that spills into the road or that i remove from clients' yards in redwood areas). i planted some two years ago at my old house on the edge of a walkway - in a 4" wide crack - and it began to grow and spread about 6 months after i planted it. it gets about 20-40 minutes of late afternoon sun and lots of wind. i watered it once per week. now it fills an area 5' long (even though the above-ground portion was torn out last spring by someone who thought that he was 'weeding'). despite appearing very delicate, i find it to be a very tough plant.
i planted some v. planipetala in pots about 2
months ago, and it's surviving so far - but not growing yet. i'd really like to get some v.
chrysantha if anyone knows of a legitimate source.

The Jepson Horticultural Database derives from the horticulture information provided in the first edition of The Jepson Manual for more than 3500 native species. The database is intended to allow this information to be searched easily and maintained conveniently. It will be expanded to allow searches that include other characteristics of the plants. The Jepson Herbarium gratefully acknowledges the Elvenia J. Slosson Endowment Fund for supporting the development of the Jepson Horticultural Database.
