30_14 Calico Wash 2500 ft. Mohave Desert No. 5816. Eurotia lanata. Each fruit is in the axil of a bract. The horns of the sac are right and left, and there is a marked, i.e. ready line of fissure, median, separating the bracts as lateral, not fore and aft as in Atriplex, each bract terminating in the horn as appendage. Each bract has also a median clear line or midrib but is not so readily split along this line. The horn is terminal and is merely the lanceolate or attenuate apex which is conduplicate on itself! Ovary very hairy! - Fouquieria splendens. Miss Waterman calls it Candle Bush. "The least little rain sends it into leaf" Bright red flowers = flame |
30_15 28 Apr. 1914 No. 5817. See page 29. No. 5818. Lupinus odoratus Hal. Corolla a real purple, rich and royal, its quadrate white spot very sharply defined! Keel glabrous. Banner not notched. Sandy wash. No. 5819. Orthocarpus purpurascens Bth. var ornatus Jepson Bracts dull red-brown, tipped with pink-red. Corolla deep red, the sacs tipped with sulphur yellow. Sandy wash. - Drove out into the Calico Wash with Miss Waterman behind her pair of blacks. It rained all the way, very hard on the first summit and in the wash. Drops small but having velocity and frigidity! But I got some good things and good wet. |
