15_178 Berlin, Germany flowers present but not "get-at-able" -- very poor little specimens, "miserable" in fact. Label in hand of Chamisso! "ad portum St. Francisci, Novae California". Small plants with narrower leaves collected also by Hillebrand in the Oakland Hills, 1863, "wet places" ---------- = Phacelia circinata Jacq. A spm. coll by Bertero, 532 _ 1229, Sept. 1828, at Rancagua [?], la Quinta, Chili. is exactly like a spm. by Wright -- in foliage, pubescence, flowers. The S. Am. thing is like our ordinary Coast Range form with a pair of supplementary leaflets, shortly-peduncled shortish racemes, -- not like imbricata or Californica. The S. Am. has a softish pubes. |
15_179 April 19, 1906 beneath the bristly pubescence. ---------- = Phacelia malvaefolia Cham. & S. Type! Label in Chamisso's hand. "Ad Portum St. Francisco Novae California legit. Ad. C. Cham" Scrap a branchlet 15 cm. long. Largest leaf 3.5 cm. long, unequally toothed but not distinctly and sharply double toothed as in Heller's 5702 Lake Merced which is identical in all other features -- bristly character (pustulate-dilated bases to bristles as in original) etc. ---------- - Heard last night the news of the fearful earthquake in California. It is next to impossible to work or keep one's thoughts in order. |
