14_96 Kew Herbarium = Sir George Watt is working on Indian Economic Botany and is now much interested in Gossypium species. He found the tangle of cult. forms hopeless, abandoned doing anything with them, is now working up the wild species he tells me, and will then refer the cult. forms to their nearest wild allies. Official India wants to know what certain species are botanically. This is important to them so that they can proceed with improvement breeding on intelligent lines. Philip Miller bred a plant in the Chelsea Garden, sent the seed to Georgia in 1723, and from it came the most valued cotton in the S.[South] U.S. Miller's main parent cam from (?northern South America). A knowledege of the botaincal species enables the breeder to plan with greater judgment his breeding. - Gurania, genus of Cucurbitaceae 57 species, in only 9 are the female flowers known! only in 5, fruits known says my friend Sprague.
