b Hrusa et al., ms later published in Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DISTRIBUTION: SCo.; STATUS: probably extirpated.; NOTES: reported as Haplopappus ciliatus (Nutt.) DC. in Smith, C.F., (1976, pg. 291), but excluded from the 2nd ed. (Smith, C.F., 1998) and apparently not persisting.
c Hrusa et al., Madrono 49(2)61-98. 2002: DIST: SCo: Hrusa et al. Current Status: No current information: DOC: Ventura Co.: along RR in Ventura. 1962, H.M. Pollard s.n. (CAS, SBBG): NOTES: Reported in Smith, C.F., (1976, pg. 291) as Haplopappus ciliatus (Nutt.) DC., but excluded from the 2nd ed. (Smith, C.F., 1998) and perhaps not persisting.
Initial Editorial Comments not included in Gray Card Index; in no way mentioned in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] (despite Kartesz & Meacham citation), Prionopsis ciliata (Nutt.) Nutt. recognized in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1], listed as synonym of Grindelia papposa in Kartesz & Meacham; according to Source c, status uncertain, perhaps not persisting (11 Feb 2003)
Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 25 Mar 2003 e-mail from Jeff Greenhouse see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 Correspondence 1 indicates G. L. Nesom, Y. B. Suh, and B. B. Simpson (Phytologia 75:341--346, 1993) propose the transfer of Prionopsis ciliata to Grindelia, as Grindelia papposa G. L. Nesom & Y. B. Suh since Grindelia ciliata was already in use for a different plant; and that inclusion of SnFrB in the distribution given in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] apparently is based on a single collection, of a waif (JEPS58981, Howell 31901, San Francisco waterfront, waif in waste ground, 9-30-56) reported in Howell, et al., "A Flora of San Francisco, California", Wasmann J. Biol 16:144 (1958).
Correspondence 2 12 Feb 2007 e-mail from David J. Keil to Margriet Wetherwax, including comments on numerous genera to be submitted by Keil for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to David J. Keil (Family Editor for Asteraceae in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2]), Prionopsis ciliata (Nutt.) Nutt. is to be treated in The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] as a synonym [of Grindelia papposa G. L. Nesom & Y. B. Suh].
Correspondence 3 13 Sep 2007 e-mail from David J. Keil see Comment 3
Editorial Comments 3 Correspondence 3 indicates: that G. L. Nesom, Y. B. Suh, and B. B. Simpson (Phytologia 75:341--346, 1993) were correct in transferring Prionopsis ciliata to Grindelia, but were incorrect in proposing Grindelia papposa G. L. Nesom & Y. B. Suh as a replacement name; that they thought that Grindelia ciliata was already in use for a different plant, but the cited competing name, Grindelia ciliata (Nutt.) Spreng., actually is based on the same type (Donia ciliata Nutt.) as Prionopsis ciliata (Nutt.) Nutt. (see ICPN and Strother's Flora North AmericaM treatment 20:428); that Grindelia papposa is therefore a superfluous renaming of Grindelia ciliata [and therefore illegitimate]; that therefore the correct name for the taxon in Grindelia is Grindelia ciliata, not Grindelia papposa; that Munz (1974) cited a southern California location for the taxon ("Indrod. Ventura R. estuary"), for which he used Haplopappus ciliatus, that is not mentioned in the International Plant Names Index evaluation; that Keil found no specimen record in the Consortium of California Herbaria database; that Munz (1968) references Howell as the source of both the San Francisco and Ventura County records (possibly both CAS specimens according to Keil); and that it may well be that the Ventura Co. collection records a waif occurrence as well.
