Correspondence and Comments Subsequent to Initial Analysis
Correspondence 1 | [for Arctostaphylos peninsularis] $ 8 Feb 2002, from Margriet Wetherwax see Comment 1
Editorial Comments 1 | Correspondence 1 indicates that, according to a pers. comm. to J. Keeley (in Madrono 41:1-12. 1994), Philip V. Wells, The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author, rejected Arctostaphylos peninsularis P. V. Wells [even though he himself described it] because he believed it to be a hybrid; it also states, without citing a source, that Arctostaphylos peninsularis is distributed in the interior ranges of Baja CA. [According to Keeley & Massihi (Madrono 41:2. 1994), plants collected in 1973 in n San Diego Co. were considered by Keeley and others, in local floras and rare plant inventories (cited in Correspondence 1), to represent a range extension of Arctostaphylos peninsularis, described by P. V. Wells from interior mountain ranges of Baja CA. Wells did not include Arctostaphylos peninsularis in his The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] treatment for CA, however, because he considers the San Diego plants in question instead to be "errant" hybrids between Arctostaphylos glauca and Arctostaphylos glandulosa. Keeley & Massihi (Madrono 41:1-12. 1994) concluded that the San Diego taxon is not only distinct from Arctostaphylos peninsularis, but is not of hybrid origin either. They named this taxon Arctostaphylos rainbowensis. There is no evidence that Wells no longer recognizes Arctostaphylos peninsularis, only that he does not consider it to be present in CA. It is unknown at this time whether or not Wells, the The Jepson Manual [Ed. 1] author, accepts Arctostaphylos rainbowensis, so it seems perhaps most appropriate to retain the Current Status as tentative 1 at present.]
Correspondence 2 | Treatment and author notes submitted for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] by V. Thomas Parker, Michael C. Vasey, Jon E. Keeley see Comment 2
Editorial Comments 2 | Correspondence 2 indicates that for The Jepson Manual [Ed. 2] Arctostaphylos rainbowensis J. E. Keeley & Massihi is to be recognized and treated as native to CA.
