Stem: trunk < 53 m, 2.3 m wide; mature bark generally red-brown, furrows closely spaced, deep, forming ridges, odor banana-, pineapple-, or vanilla-like; mature crown rounded; bud not resinous, scales light brown, white-hairy
Leaves 3 per bundle, 12–22 cm, grayish blue-green, glaucous
Seed cone spreading or recurved, generally 13–25 cm, ± oblong, brown; stalk < 3 cm, persistent with basal scales; scale surfaces generally of similar color, tips reflexed, elongated < 3 cm, with prickled knobs
Ecology: Upper mixed-conifer, red-fir forests, elsewhere on serpentine
Elevation: 450–3100 m.
