Notes: The pendulum has swung back and forth on this species. The type came from San Francisco. Harvey considered it distinct because of its large size, but admitted that it was closely related to B. fuscopurpurea (Dillwyn) Lyngbye. Smith (1944: 167) agreed with Harvey. Abbott & Hollenberg dropped B. vermicularis in favor of B. fuscopurpurea . The conspecificity of B. fuscopurpurea (marine) and B. atropurpurea (Roth) C. Agardh (freshwater) was proposed by den Hartog (1972: 274-276) and Geesink (1973: 245). In a monographic study of Bangia , Sheath & Cole (1984) decided to recognize B. atropurpurea in the Atlantic and B. vermicularis in the Pacific. This genus is currently being studied and there will doubtless be changes.
