Gastroclonium coulteri (Harv. ) Kyl.
Lomentaria ovalis var. coulteri Harvey 1853: 78. Gastroclonium coulteri (Harv.) Kylin 1931: 30; Smith 1944: 303 (incl. synonymy).
Thalli 10-26(39) cm tall, with reddish bases and greenish tops; solid axes 1.5-2.5 mm diam.; septa of hollow axes at intervals of 1-2 mm; cysto carps 500-800 µm diam.; other characters as for genus.
Common on rocks, intertidal to subtidal (to 14 m), S. Br. Columbia to Baja Calif.; very common throughout Calif. Type locality: Monterey, Calif.
In winter, the plants are commonly eroded and bear only the lower axial portions.
