Thalli saxicolous, with several to numerous erect branches arising from mostly discoid base. Erect branches cylindrical to complanate, fleshy to cartilaginous. Gonimoblast with or without special filaments connecting with pericarp (Papenfuss, 1967, has found filaments present or lacking in the type species of Gracilaria).

Gracilaria andersonii (Grun.) Kyl.

Cordylecladia andersonii Grunow 1886: 62. Gracilaria andersonii (Grun.) Kylin 1941: 21. Gracilariopsis andersonii (Grun.) Dawson 1949a: 43.

Thalli usually with numerous erect branches, 6-18 cm tall, arising from semistoloniferous bases, dark red below, grading to straw-colored apices; branches terete, 1-1.3 mm diam., irregularly and abundantly multifariously branched, wiry and still; medulla of large cells; cortex of about 3 layers of smaller cells somewhat anticlinally arranged; tetrasporangia oblong to ovoid, 30-35 µm long, densely grouped in cortex of upper branches; spermatangia in deep, closely grouped pockets; cystocarps somewhat globose, slightly rostrate, mostly 900+ µm diam., without special filaments between gonimoblast and pericarp.

Frequent on rocks usually shallowly embedded in sand, low intertidal, Santa Barbara, Calif., to Pta. Maria, Baja Calif. Type locality: "California."
