The Index Nominum Algarum is a card index (partly computerized) to names of algae (ca. 200,000). It is maintained at the Herbarium of the University of California, Berkeley, by Paul Silva. The file that you are viewing is intended to contain names of taxa at two taxonomic ranks, genus-group (genera, subgenera, sections) and species-group (species, subspecies, varieties, forms), that include Porphyra or any of its synonyms. In addition, basionyms of combinations are given. It should be emphasized that the INA does not attempt to indicate which legitimate names should be applied to currently recognized taxa, as these decisions depend on constantly changing taxonomic opinion. Some of the names in the present file are referable to taxa currently excluded from Porphyra or even from the Bangiaceae. This file was prepared at the request of Carolyn Bird. It is being made available on the WWW for the use of others interested in Porphyra. The file is autonomous--you might find it convenient to download the source (e.g. "save as" under Netscape file menu) and open it with your browser locally. If you are aware of Porphyra names that have been omitted, or have other questions or suggestions about the Index, please send e-mail to psilva@uclink4.berkeley.edu. The file will be updated at irregular intervals.
