1. Leaflets 5–11, 

elliptic 

In the shape of a flattened circle or ellipse; wider than linear

to oblong-ovate, 

entire 

Having margins that are continuous and smooth (i.e., without teeth, lobes, etc.).

; nut shell ± thin, wrinkled ..... [J. regia]

1' Leaflets (9)11–21, narrow-elliptic to -triangular or -lanceolate, ± 

serrate 

Having margins with sharp, fine to coarse teeth generally pointing tipward, not outward; margins with such teeth on such primary teeth are doubly serrate.

; nut shell thick, smooth to shallowly grooved.

2. Leaflets generally narrow-elliptic to -lance-elliptic (less often lanceolate), rounded to 

acute 

Having a short-tapered, sharp tip, the sides convex or straight and converging at less than a right angle.

; abaxial vein axils glabrous ..... J. californica

2' Leaflets narrow-triangular to -lanceolate, 

acuminate 

Having a long-tapered, sharp tip, the sides concave.

; abaxial vein axils with tufts of hairs ..... J. hindsii
