NATIVE Habit: Annual, 2--45 cm. Stem: simple or branching from base or above, woolly, subglabrous in age. Leaf: (4)7--34 mm, woolly, becoming subglabrous, entire to 3- or sometimes 5-lobed, lobes linear. Inflorescence: heads generally terminal, occasionally axillary, woolly, terminal heads +- 3--11 flowered, axillary heads sometimes 1-flowered. Flower: calyx 4.8--10 mm, densely woolly, lobes unequal; corolla 7--11(12.4) mm, sub-salverform, radial, tube 4--6(7) mm, white or sometimes slightly purplish distally, throat 0.6--1.6 mm, yellow to pale yellow, tube + throat 4.5--7.2(8.6) mm, lobes 2--4.6 mm, blue to lavender or light pink to white, sometimes paler proximally, generally with dark maroon-colored, irregularly shaped spot near base (sometimes absent); stamens exserted 0.8--1.4 mm past corolla sinuses, generally at least 2 mm < corolla lobes, attached 0.2--1.1 mm below sinuses, free portion 1.5--3 mm, subequal, anthers 0.75--1.5 mm; pistil 4.6--10 mm, to 2 mm > stamens, ovules 1--3 per ovary chamber, (3)5--7 ovules total. Fruit: capsule +- 6 mm, seeds (1)2 per chamber, with 2 seeds in >= 2 chambers. Seed: light gray-brown, slimy when wet, +- 1.6--2.8 mm, elliptic, sometimes angular. Ecology: Hillsides, flats, benches above washes, dry washes, ditches, disturbed areas; in grassland, desert scrub, chaparral, arid woodland, mixed forest; Elevation: 915--2340(2500) m.
