Common Name: ROSE FAMILY
Habit: Annual to tree, glandular or not. Leaf: simple to palmately or pinnately compound, generally alternate; stipules free to fused (0), persistent to deciduous. Inflorescence: cyme, raceme, panicle, cluster, or flowers 1; bractlets on pedicel ("pedicel bractlets") generally 0--3(many), subtended by bract or generally not. Flower: generally bisexual, radial; hypanthium free or fused to ovary, saucer- to funnel-shaped, subtending bractlets ("hypanthium bractlets") 0--5, alternate sepals; sepals generally 5; petals generally 5, free; stamens (0,1)5--many, anther pollen sacs generally 2; pistils (0)1--many, simple or compound, ovary superior to inferior, styles 1--5. Fruit: 1--many per flower, achene (fleshy-coated or not), follicle, drupe, or pome with generally papery core, occasionally drupe-like with 1--5 stones. Seed: generally 1--5 (per fruit, not per flower).

Habit: Perennial herb, tufted, +- glandular; odor +- resinous. Stem: ascending to erect, 15--50(90) cm. Leaf: generally basal, odd-pinnately compound; leaflets 15--35 per side, +- overlapped, toothed to palmately divided, segments +- oblanceolate. Inflorescence: +- cyme; pedicels straight, bractlets 0. Flower: hypanthium cup-like, flat-bottomed, bractlets 5; sepals often reflexed; petals white or +- pink, midvein often +- red; stamens 20, filaments +- flat, often an erect tube; pistils many, ovaries superior, style attached below fruit tip, +- rough, thick. Fruit: achene, +- 1.5 mm.
Etymology: (Latin: small Horkelia) Note: Flower +- like Horkelia.

NATIVE
Habit: Plant often +- gray, often not sticky. Leaf: basal generally 7--17 cm, leaflets 15--30 per side, generally 3--10 mm; cauline 2--4. Inflorescence: open at least in fruit; pedicels 1--15 mm. Flower: 10--15 mm wide; sepals 3--6 mm; petals 3--7 mm, +- oblanceolate; anthers 0.5--1 mm, filaments 1--2.5 mm; style +- 3--4 mm.
Ecology: Partial shade at granitic meadow edges in conifer forest; Elevation: 1400--2900 m. Bioregional Distribution: s SNH (w slope). Flowering Time: Jun--Aug
