Fruit: capsule. Seed: 1--many, when wetted swelling or not, gelatinous or not. NATIVE Habit: Annual. Stem: 2--15 cm, erect, branched from base or above, lateral branches sometimes overtopping primary axis, lightly woolly to subglabrous. Leaf: 3--25 mm, linear to thread-like, lightly woolly to subglabrous, entire or 3-lobed at base. Inflorescence: heads terminal, sometimes also with axillary heads in large plants, woolly, 2--8-flowered. Flower: calyx 4--7.6 mm, woolly, lobes unequal; corolla 4.2--6 mm, funnel-shaped to sub-salverform, tube 2--2.8 mm, +- 1/2 corolla length, white to cream, throat (0.3)0.5--0.9(1.0) mm, white to cream, sometimes pale yellowish, tube + throat 2.6--3.6 mm, lobes 1.3--2.5 mm, +- 1/3 corolla length, length varying by <= 0.5 mm, white or translucent to transparent; stamens included 0.4 below corolla sinus to exserted 0.1 mm above, attached 0.8--1.7 mm below sinus, insertion distance varying by 0.1--0.4 mm, free portion 1--1.25 mm, equal to subequal, anthers 0.5--0.7 mm; pistil 2.6--4.8 mm, exceeding stamens 0--2 mm, ovules 3--6 per ovary chamber. Fruit: capsule +- 3--4 mm, seeds 1--4 per chamber. Seed: slimy when wetted, +- 0.8--1.2 mm, tan to light brown, often angular. Ecology: Open swales or mounds in alkali sinks or plains, floodplains, flat benches above washes, in alkali or arid scrub, sometimes with biologic soil crust; Elevation: 45--810 m.
