NATIVEHabit: Perennial herb, rhizomes stout.
Stem: 7--29 cm, glabrous; rosettes loose in sunny sites, internodes easily visible, generally > 3 mm.
Leaf: strongly flattened; rosette leaves > stem leaves, 12--35 mm, 5--18 mm wide, slightly glaucous, broadly obovate to oblanceolate, tip often notched; stem leaves alternate, 4--19 mm, elliptic to obovate or oblanceolate, generally overlapping 0--2 adjacent leaves.
Inflorescence: generally cylindrical (lanceolate or head-like), loosely flowered, with <= 55 flowers, erect in flower, nodding or arching in bud.
Flower: calyx lobes (8--)15--45% as long as petals; petals 6--12 mm, light yellow, generally with pink or red midribs, often aging red, spreading, tips acute, often with a subterminal mucro; filaments white to yellow-green; anthers red, rusty red, or dark orange, aging purple or black, sometimes yellow aging brownish.
Fruit: follicles fused at base, erect.
Seed: 1.2--1.5 mm, lanceolate, striate.
Chromosomes: 2n=30.
Ecology: Outcrops, ridgelines, rocky slopes, rocky forest openings, generally on serpentine;
Elevation: 1100--2400 m.
Bioregional Distribution: e KR (adjacent portions of Shasta, Siskiyou and Trinity cos.), CaRH (Mt. Shasta, Mud Creek Canyon).
Flowering Time: Jun--Aug

S. rubiginosum has denser inflorescences, denser rosettes, and occurs further south.
