Fruit: achene, follicle, berry, +- utricle in Trautvetteria, in aggregate or not, 1--many-seeded. Genera In Family: +- 60 genera, 1700 species: worldwide, especially northern temperate, tropical mountains; many ornamental (Adonis, Aquilegia, Clematis, Consolida, Delphinium, Helleborus, Nigella). Toxicity: some highly TOXIC (Aconitum, Actaea, Delphinium, Ranunculus). NATIVE Habit: Annual 20--80 cm, floating, roots 0, or creeping on mud, rooting at nodes. Leaf: floating leaves 0.5--0.8 cm, 0.9--1.5 cm wide, reniform, deeply 3-parted, segments elliptic or obovate, occasionally notched; submersed leaves generally 2--3-dissected, generally petioled, stipules gradually reduced distally on, fused to stem. Flower: receptacle glabrous; sepals 5, spreading, 2--3 mm, 1--1.5 mm wide, early-deciduous; petals 5, 4--6 mm, 2--5 mm wide, white or white with yellow claws; style 1--1.5 mm. Fruit: 2--6, body 2--2.4 mm, 1.4--1.8 mm wide, lenticular, wall thick, transversely wrinkled, beak deciduous, occasionally leaving stub to 0.2 mm. Ecology: Ponds; Elevation: < 500 m.
