Habitat  ?   Open ground in mixed conifer forest (ponderosa pine, sugar pine, white fir, black oak); shallow rocky soil (metamorphic rock) with Arnica nevadensis, A. discoidea, Lilium washingtonianum (short plants), Ceanothus prostratus, Eremogone clifftonii, Calystegia malacophylla, Sanicula tuberosa. Area burned in 2008 wildfire, about half the trees, some large, killed here.
