Habitat  ?   Dense Redwood forest. This area has been logged; stumps 6-7 feet in diameter not uncommon. Understory composed of: Trillium ovatum, Oxalis oregana, Myrica californica, Lithocarpus densiflora (seedlings and a few small trees), Vaccinium ovatum, Woodwardia fimbriata, Asarum caudatum, Viola sempervirens, Acer macrophyllum (occasionally), Smilacina amplexicaulis, Rubus parviflorus, Equisetum sp., and Aralia californica. Soil rich and black with a deep layer of litter over it. Growing in moist streambed near a spring which is probably perennial. 
Notes  ?   Colony consists of about 1-2 dozen individuals. No plants in flower. Some leaves beginning to wither or are being eaten by insects.
