Habitat  ?   On steep slope of exposed shale, in cracks of shale. Associates: Artemisia californica, Phacelia distans, Salvia columbariae, Eremalche parryi, Clarkia affinis, Eschscholzia hypecoides, Amsinckia menziesii. 
Notes  ?   Infrequent. Herbaceous perennial, <⃒1 m tall, stems hollow, sap milky; leaves entire above, widely dentate as leaves become larger; ligules white, red-striped below; anthers dark.
