Habitat  ?   In the upper Sonoran Zone of the South Coast Ranges. Growing on flats and lower slope sin gravelly soil along the road to Vancouver Pinnacles, among thickets of Adenostoma fasciculatum. 
Notes  ?   Scattered. This species has not been known hitherto from north of Arroyo Seco, Monterey County. It was originally collected by Douglas, probably on his trip from Monterey to Santa Barbara, but the exact locality is not known. Plants shrubby, 1 to 2 m. high, with long wand-like branches. Bracts reddish: corolla, stamens, and style purple, often tinged with blue.
