66_20 Odors and sounds of the old days. Cooking apricots _ the aroma then diffused through the house - a fine heartening odor telling of good eating. The neighing of a horse_ - how characteristic a sound _ often heard with the wind changed or of evenings. Alamo Creek, a good deal of water in it! _ July 25, 1942. Much like old times! _I mean the neighing when he is lost or apart from his fellows, and is neighing anxiously for them. |
66_21 The Road to Suisun Color in the flat fields and the shallow pools of the early spring: Eryngium vaseyi filling with a sea-green hue the borders of Baeria, and Blow-wives scattered over the grassy fields. But we mostly went in the summer time when the picture of the brown hills with their warm tones became deeply etched on the mind. We saw little life on these trips. Sometimes a curlew would be seen on some alkali spot, suddenly darting up with its vibrant shrill note. -Weeds in Vaca Valley. F.B. 1:180. -When the Pineapple Weed begins to appear in the hard ground along paths and by roadways, then these days are the beginning of summer and spring has gone! |
