66_1 The Brick Yard Near the railroad bridge across the Ulatis on the south side of the creek a brick kiln was built in the days when I first started to the grammar school at Vacaville. It was the first time I had ever seen such a thing _ doubtless it was the first mass manufacturing I ever saw. A horse turned the winch which sent the soft clayed mud out into wooden forms holding perhaps six bricks. A man picked up one of these and carried it out to a cleaned piece of earth, inverted the form and left the soft bricks to dry in the sun.
