Kearsarge Pass to

From the summit of the Pass we had a fine view of Mt. Brewer, Deerhorn Peak, and the surrounding peaks. Brewer was particularly fine and loomed decidedly as we went up. The Kearsarge Pinnacles and the Videttes claiming less attention.

In many respects the flora of the canon of _Little Pine Creek at the higher altitudes is not so radically different from the western side. The botanizing, contrary to my expectation, I found much better however! Pinus albicaulis, P. Balfouriana and

P. Murrayana were all found on this side. At Onion Valley there were firs and Betula occidentalis comes in. This descends to the Owen's Valley Mesa. The Black Oak was the only oak noticed. This descends to the mesa, but the Birch runs out along the streams quite to Independence. So does the Yellow Pine. Ceanothus cuneatus_ came in about at the Kearsarge Mill and was followed down to the Mesa. Lower down were characteristic desert shrubs. - Ephedra, a cactus, Artemisia tridentate, Purshia, Rabbit Bush (Bigelovia), etc.
