We pass out of the San Fernando Valley by Fernando Pass. The notch through which Fremont came on his way to San Fernando is in full view from the present motor road. Over the summit of the pass we run down thru fine clusters of live oak (Quercus agrifolia), down through a canon of many fine trees of them, to the village of Newhall where we lunch. We go on to Saugus and then turn westerly down the Santa Clara River. We cross the river and turn northerly into the hills. After a bit we begin to ascend and soon are on the Ridge Road running to Tejon Pass and the San Joaquin Valley. The lower ridges are mainly and often exclusively covered with the following no.= No.8928 Salvia leucophylla Greene.
