Indio
- A man of 35, sunburned, lean but muscle-hardened and athletic touched me on the shoulder as I came out of the grocery store and said he was a former student of mine, back in 1901, L. E. Carpenter. Student of the Coll. Agr. he was the only grad. in that year, studied pharmacy and medicine, but for his health he came here to the desert and has 1000 A. land. Pumps 400 gal. a min for 10 hrs at cost of _1.00 per day. Lift of 96 feet. He reminisced a great deal about his student days at Berkeley and said: Oh, if I had only put in my time properly. I loafed the first three years, did some work the fourth year - But if I had only buckled down.
This is a story I often hear from former grads. Interestingly enough he has a very different opinion of me now from 1901. He sees now that I was tremendously interested in his welfare. Then he thought that there was "something the matter with me"!!
