26_140 Yuma, Ariz. ---------- town of Yuma is distant only about a mile. In the morning at 10:10 we go on, soon reach the town and beach the boat under the walls of the old Fort Yuma which crowns one of the rocky headlands at this point of the river, the former infantry post being on the opposite headland across the river. The fort on the Arizona side is a square of adobe walls and sentry towers at the corners. I go to work on my plants on the beach, to dry out and pack up, and Rennie goes to the town to plot our further travel and also to get news of the national election, as between Wilson, Taft, & Roosevelt. |

Sphaeralcea fendleri Gray var. gavisus [?] Jeps. on n. var.[?] Bard, Cal. Corolla pale pink. This does not well describe the shade but I find it difficult to get a term for it. [= S. angustifolia Don. var. gavisus [?] Jepson] - At the beach on the river front, Yuma, a poorly dressed indifferent-looking man strayed along looking at driftwood. Finally he came up and we fell to talkng. A little to my suprise, altho I am not really suprised at intellect in back-country men, he said: I like plants. When people ask me why I take |
