1_84 La Grange (Stanislaus Co.) to Hazel Green. (Mariposa Co.) road for La Grange, diagonally across country; lunched pretty close to the Sierra foothills. Camped at La Grange on the bluff over-hanging the river at the west end of the village. July 2 - 22 miles to Coulterville through the hot foothills. Lunched about 10 mi. from La Grange. The Douglas or Blue Oak covered the first low rock-covered hills and was the first tree. Ceanothus cuneatus next came in, individuals and in little clusters. (No chapparal), very scraggy. As we gained altitude at the last of the 10 miles (see p. 136c) we got the Gray Leaf Pine and just before it the Buckeye. Poison Oak |
1_85 July 2 - 5, 1896. was rare and was only seen at the last of the 10 mi. At the lunch place Quercus Wislizenii appeared to be common. Rhamnus Californica or rubra was got at La Grange. July 3 - Camped in an old apple orchard within 3 mi. of Coulterville and this morning, July 3, went on through Coulterville where we purchased some supplies and then up Greeley Hill to the Mountain View Saloon where we lunched. That afternoon we made Bower's Cave early. Setchell went into the cave. July 4 - Toll House. See p. 136a seq. Made a point within 2 mi. of Hazel Green where Billy "balked" at noon.
