East side of rift=Earthquake fault.

Plumbago lanceolata, badly killed out, only a few plants showing any signs of life. Stumps in low places utterly dead black. Branched caudices 3 in. high. Species will not survive. (On west side of rift healthy and flourishing).

Grindelia cuneifolia. Shrubs all killed except a few in high places. Very marked and complete destruction. But there is a lot of it dead on the west (uplifted) side of rift!

-Distichlis maritima, looks sickly in one large depressed area just east of rift. Area adjoining on west side healthy.
-Populus species healthy.
-Salicornia occidentalis-this is most striking. East of rift is a great area dull brown, west a great area greenish. On examination I find the dull brown to be composed of utterly dead plants or of unhealthy plants consisting of a more or less exiguous axis with one or few fleshy branchlets made up of several joints.
