Came to Berlin by way of Hof and Leipzig. The German fields are not enclosed and the farmers live in villages, going from the village into the field to work. The whole country is rolling or semi-mountains with flat valleys here and there, sometimes being plains of considerable extent. We passed through considerable forests on the way, expecially between Hof and Leipzig. Near Leipzig the country becomes flat or flatter and so on to Berlin. We crossed the river which was about the last thing to be seen in the gathering dusk.
