15_152 Nurnberg a very fine rose-window. The attentions shown you by hotel people to put you under obligations for gratuities is remarkable. I went to a simple hotel: the Nurnberger Hof. The second night I left the Gast-Zimmer at about 9:30 to go up to bed. The head waiter said "good night" and a boy preceded me up three flights of stairs, opened the door, turned on the electric light, said "Good Night" and closed the door. Nothing but that a self-reliant American would have done for himself without thinking of it. It makes a Californian feel as if he were a helpless imbecile. |
15_153 March 25, 1906. Came to Berlin by way of Hof and Leipzig. The German fields are not enclosed and the farmers live in villages, going from the village into the field to work. The whole country is rolling or semi-mountains with flat valleys here and there, sometimes being plains of considerable extent. We passed through considerable forests on the way, expecially between Hof and Leipzig. Near Leipzig the country becomes flat or flatter and so on to Berlin. We crossed the river which was about the last thing to be seen in the gathering dusk. |
