Mr. Lloyd-George, President of the Board of Trade, in the Campbell-Bannerman Ministry. - "If a young politician wants to succeed in Parliament he must persistently play up to some big man on the other side. He will get terrible knock-down blows at times, but he must be up and at it again." - He got the idea from Lord Randolph Churchill who won his spurs by the fearless way he badgered Mr. Gladstone, and has made it a rule to attack Mr. Chamberlain. He is never so happy as when in bitter tones he is scorning him, taunting him, whipping Radicals into cries of derisive joy.

-Sir. W.T. Thiselton-Dyer is very much disliked and is accounted a first-rate snob. He is a man that has no appreciation of the American practice of getting work out of subordinates, i.e., putting a good man into a place and giving him free rein to accomplish work and not badgering him with authority from above and all sorts of petty restrictions and hindrances. No one is allowed to do anything here unless Dyer first knows all about it and gives his imperial sanction. The people do not dare to put a bar across a t without first asking the Director. How different from the U.S. Geological Survey where the work is often finished before it is authorize. So, at Kew, there is dissension everywhere-not among the subordinates but between them and Dyer. So Britten has attacked him, too, with the tactics of a weak man against a man in a strong position-i.e., with unceasing pin pricks which have thoroughly enraged Dyer. But now!-everyone is glad that he has resigned. - Dec. 24, 1905.
