Tohmie instead, power of atty [attorney], etc. to recover the seeds from Brown, etc.
Brown's Journal of his travels in Oregon and N. [Northern] California were published in the Farmer, Nov. 1, 1865, narrating the trip from Eugene over the Cascades to the "plains" east, Deschutes River, Klamath Marsh, Fort Klamath, ending at Jacksonville (Rogue River Valley), and again in the issue of May 16, 1866, containing descriptions and special localities for his oaks collected on his trip to the coast at Crescent City. See also descrip [description] and figure of Quercus Hindsii, in issue of Oct. 18, 1865.
The first two are prints of reports sent the Assoc. [Association]. He got his [?sci?] names from a Pac. R.R. Rep. which

was given the privileges of the Edinburgh "Royal Botanic Garden Library and Herbarium" by the Professor of Botany, Sir Isaac Bayley Balfour. He was very kind and labored zealously in order that everything which they possessed might be at my disposal.
