10_98 Briceland to White-thorn to No. 2207. Echinocystis [marah Cogn] [Marah oreganus (T. & G.) Howell] Pods naked at the pointed apex, pale or greenish but whitish at the point. Spines short, scattered and soft, of a darker green than the pod, in fact very dark green. Seeds 2 to 4, disposed in 2 cells, flattish -- Along woody bank of stream in White Thorn vale. The dark longitudinal veins are prominent, also. Is not the character of the spines being darker than the body of the pod also that of the Vaca Mts plant? Does not appear in my notes of May 3; look up specimens. [= E. oregona Cogn.] No. 2208. Salmon Berry [Rubus spectabilis Menziesii Wats.] -- red and salmon fruits on bushes near together. Salmon berries = color of Diplacus glutinosus. |
10_99 Kenny's June 23, 1903. - Ceanothus incanus -- 10-12 ft. h - " foliosus, up to 16 ft. h. Note the long peduncles & small clusters - Douglas Spruce leaders, young and tender, bending over in graceful plumes -- Not yet woody enough to straighten up. There in camp -- 1 1/2 mi. south of Kenny's is a grove of them: One cut down was 13 years old, 14 3/4 ft. high, had made 2 ft 8 in growth in one year -- fine growth. - Ceanothus foliosus very abundant, pure thickets of it. Bark of main stem or trunk bright green! -- very noticeable. - Madronas arching over the road, trunks flattened and in a long bow!
