10_12 Berkeley - Matricaria discoidea - following the footpaths of man everywhere, across lots, fields etc - There is a big Valley Oak in the San Ramon Valley at the southwestern base of Mt. Diablo. It is a large tree, so large that Miss Minnie Ray Wilson has spoken to me several times about it. It stands on the Olney Farm (Mayor Olney of Oakland). The measurements taken by Mr. Will Olney and Miss Wilson are as follows: -- Circ. at 3 1/2 ft: = 18' - 8" " " base = 24' - 4" Diameter of crown in shortest |
10_13 May 13, 1903 direction = 93' - 3" Diameter of crown in longest direction = 109 ft 1 in. - The hills are beginning to be brown, especially on the southern shoulders and knobs. Today, May 16, a north wind is blowing -- the first of the year since midwinter. As Prof. Hilgard expresses it, it is blowing away _100,000 per hour. - And again today, May 17, the hills of the opposite shore in Marin are pallid-brown and really look unreal so quick is the transition. "Keep a good heart, though you be drawn and quartered for it" said the Oak. |
